Last week, we found ourselves with a spare couple of hours in Miami before a flight back to Heathrow and decided to explore Miami’s South Beach for an early afternoon of art deco Instagramming.
Miami is an exciting melting pot of communities with a strong Latin influence. South Beach has a personality all of its own, attracting a laid back bohemian crowd who enjoy the many restaurants and bars along the famous Ocean Drive. South Beach has a vibrant and proud LGBTQ community too, with an incredibly welcoming atmosphere.
You can cram a lot in to four hours, but we’d recommend starting on Ocean Drive, the iconic art deco lined boulevard running along the beachfront. The 1930s and 40s hotels that face the sea are a riot of colour and design, completely unlike the ultra-modern high rise landscape of the rest of the city. If you’re in to photography, it’s a haven for Instagrammers and camera-buffs alike.
You can’t visit South Beach and not visit the beach itself, even in winter the temperature hovers around 20C. We enjoyed 25C sunshine whilst we paddled in the ocean and hopped from lifeguard station to lifeguard station, each brightly coloured and wildly different to the one before.
Finally, before heading to the airport we settled down to lunch at one of the best restaurants in the area, The Naked Taco, where beautifully flavoured tacos are served alongside margaritas and mojitos to die for. If you are flying out of Miami Airport, The Naked Taco is a great place to eat before heading to the terminal. Miami International isn’t renowned for its variety of restaurants and cafes; The Naked Taco is a fantastic place to end a southern Florida holiday with.
This definitely isn’t your bog-standard Tex-Mex restaurant though; the menu ranges from crispy prawns to spiced pork, succulent baha fish to chipotle BBQ brisket, all with the freshest ingredients and your choice of soft or hard shells. If you can get a seat on the terrace, it’s a lovely place to spend a couple of hours with friends, the service is outstanding, and the atmosphere is very friendly.
Florida has so much to offer when it comes to a holiday beyond the theme parks that it’s famous for. If you want to find out more about exploring Miami’s South beach or some of the other gems in the state, give us a ring on 0800 669 6409 and we’ll be very happy to build you the perfect Florida trip.
