Taking to the open road and exploring Florida’s miles of blissful coastline on a Fly-Drive holiday is a popular – and highly worthwhile – choice for those wanting something different, and this itinerary highlights a glorious four-stop option starting in Miami and travelling north to Vero Beach. It all starts with three days to explore the best of Florida’s most iconic city, packed full of vibrant nightlife, modern art, memorable restaurants, the taste of Cuban culture and, of course, the trademark beaches, all 35 miles of them. Make sure to visit Little Havana for that true Latin flavour, plus the Vizcaya Museum for a window onto yesteryear. Then head north to Palm Beach, the upmarket resort created by Henry Flagler in the late 19th century, when his railroads opened up the state to tourism for the first time. This was where the well-heeled and the well-to-do came to escape the northern winters, and now it is home to a wonderful mix of shops, restaurants and culture, with the added bonus of more great beaches along the palm-fringed Atlantic shores. Continue north and you reach the Florida road less travelled along Hutchinson Island, a pristine stretch of barrier island that richly rewards those who like to slow down and smell the holiday coffee, as well as indulge in a little beachcombing. Then we kick things up a notch again with two days of complete pampering in Vero Beach, where the magnificent Costa d’Este resort welcomes guests to a unique stretch of coast as well as a sophisticated array of dining and spa treatments. An additional option here is a few days in all-action Orlando before the flight home.
