Hugging the shoreline of Biscayne Bay is the lush, historic Coconut Grove, a leafy bayside village that’s home to charming boutiques, gourmet restaurants, galleries and sidewalk cafes. Known for its bohemian flair, Coconut Grove is Miami’s original neighbourhood, having been founded in 1873 by an eclectic mix of artists, intellectuals and adventurers. This rich history gives the area a distinct feel that’s quite separate to the rest of the city, with a warm, laid-back atmosphere offering the perfect retreat from the stresses of city life.

Discover gardens & museums in Coconut Grove

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

The beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historical Landmark which was once the villa and estate of agricultural industrialist James Deering. Nestled on 10-acres of shoreline and right on the water, the property has been restored to its former glory, with art and antiques adorning the house and lush tropical gardens surrounding the property.

Barnacle Historic State Park

Although not quite as grand as Vizcaya, the former home of Coconut Grove pioneer Ralph Munroe, built in 1891, boasts equally impressive waterside views and offers visitors a rare glimpse of Old Florida during The Era of the Bay. The property now hosts a number of special events throughout the year, including moonlight concerts, family picnics and outdoor films.

Peacock Park

This public bayfront park honours Charles and Isabella Peacock, the builders of Miami’s first hotel, the Bay View House, on this very spot back in 1883.

Coconut Grove’s creative side

Community Art Walk

The worlds of fashion, art and music collide on the first Saturday of each month (October-April) at the free community art walk. Participating galleries, boutiques and music venues open their doors and offer special promotions to those who join the walk.

Coconut Grove Arts Festival

Every year the Arts Festival is held on the streets of Coconut Grove, offering nearly a mile of arts, food and fun. The festival runs on 17, 18 and 19 February 2018.

Kroma Art Space & Studios

Kroma is a collective art space located on Grand Avenue consisting of 18 artists’ studios and a communal gallery space that’s open to the public.

This casual cruising company is the place to go if you need a captain, a boat and an exciting way to see some of Miami’s best sights. You can book shared or private trips to visit attractions like the celebrity mansions on Star Island and Fisher Island.

If you’re looking to work up a sweat then Coconut Grove has an excellent range of running, walking and cycling paths that stretch from the Ingraham Highway through to Kennedy Park, an open waterfront expanse with exercise machines and plenty of green spaces. Coconut Grove is full of sidewalk cafés and local eateries that cater for every taste. You can take a seat at the GreenStreet Café, the quintessential brunch spot that’s also open late into the night. The Glass & Vine offers a mouthwatering combination of Latin, Italian and Floridian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere with tables shaded by live oak trees. If it’s pizza you’re after then Harry’s Pizzeria and Farinelli 1937 should certainly feature at the top of your list, while delicious pasta is available across the street in Farinelli’s sister restaurant Strada in the Grove.

If you enjoy a spot of retail therapy then we have one word for you: CocoWalk. This multi-storey mall has plenty of stores like GAP, Cheesecake Factory, Fat Tuesday, Maui Nix Surf Shop, Edward Beiner Eyewear and the exclusive First Flight Out, a Pan-Am historical exhibit and retail store. There are also restaurants, a cinema and plenty more.

While there are similar malls such as The Shops of Mayfair, it has to be said that arguably the best shopping can be found on the streets of Coconut Grove. There’s an eclectic mix of stores from surf lifestyle to high-end designer.
