Historical places of interest

Ancient Spanish Monastery

Discover this hidden gem in North Miami Beach. Originally built in Spain in 1141, the monastery was occupied by Cistercian monks for almost 700 years. In 1925, the monastery, which by then had been repurposed as a granary and stables, was purchased, dismantled brick by brick and transported to the US. Nearly 30 years later, Miami developers began the arduous task of reassembling the monastery on the site where it still stands today.

Art Deco Historic District

Wander down Ocean Drive and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the world’s largest collection of Art Deco architecture. Stroll past the iconic white facades and neon lights and you’ll soon pass hotels that have featured on the big screen in iconic films like Bad Boys and Scarface.

Holocaust Memorial

The gardens and beautiful sculptures of the Holocaust memorial pay tribute to the six million Jewish victims of World War II and the Nazi regime.

Sea Turtle Adventure

Discover more about these ancient creatures at a presentation by the dedicated naturalists at Sea Turtle Adventure. They’ll explain why Miami Beach is a favourite spot of the sea turtle and explore the sea turtle’s diet, before giving you the chance to touch real turtle shells and skulls.

South Pointe Park Pier

Grab your fishing kit and head to the pier to catch a snapper or perhaps snag a Spanish mackerel. The pier is located at the tip of South Beach, with the surrounding parkland offering picturesque walking routes for those less enthused by the fish.

Tarpoon Lagoon Dive Center

If you’re looking to take to the water and become a certified Open Water diver, look no further than Tarpoon Lagoon. They offer a number of specialised courses, from beginner to advanced, and also arrange trips to nearby shallow reefs and wreck dives.

South Beach Divers

For a mere $12, you can rent a snorkel, mask and fins for the day. With your equipment, you’re then ready to explore the Jose Cuervo Reef – an artificial 10,000lb concrete reef that was sunk on Cinco de Mayo in 2000 and is now the home of a diverse range of marine life.

Popular with locals and tourists alike, this 18-hole course is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Designed by Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest, the highly-regarded 72-par course has a number of challenging holes as well as an excellent restaurant for a delicious post-round treat.

Bal Harbour Shops

What was once a World War II army barracks is now an impressive al fresco mall. Opened in 1965, it was Florida’s first shopping center dedicated solely to high fashion, which gives the mall an exclusive feel. Here you’ll find the likes of Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Gucci, Chanel, Valentino and Jimmy Choo. Wander from shop to shop passing palm trees, koi ponds, captivating fountains and bright tropical flowers as you go.

The Falls

Discover the perfect souvenir at The Falls, the area’s largest open-air shopping center. It’s home to over 100 shops and restaurants, ranging from Michael Kors to Build-a-Bear to Corner Bakery Café.
