Tallahassee history

Bellevue Plantation at Tallahassee Museum

This plantation belonged to Virginia native Catherine Murat, a descendant of George Washington and the wife of a French nobleman called Achille Murat. She lived here from 1854 to 1867 along with 25 slaves who worked in the cotton fields and provided skilled labour elsewhere on the plantation.

Black Archives Research Center & Museum

The Black Archives, housed within the First Carnegie Library, has one of the most extensive collections of African American artefacts in the Southeast, making this an excellent place to learn more about the history of the city and the wider state of Florida.

Camp Gordon Johnson WWII Museum

This once operational training facility for troops during WWII is now a museum that has more than 5,000 sq. ft of photos, memorabilia, amphibious vehicles and films documenting the activity during that time.

Cape St. George Light & Museum

This lighthouse turned museum sits in the centre of St. George Island and gives visitors an insight into the lighthouse’s 100 years spent protecting the mariners of Apalachicola Bay.

Florida Historic Capitol Museum

Situated in the centre of the Florida State Complex is the Florida Historic Capitol Museum, an impressive building with a distinctive stained glass dome and candy-striped awnings which houses a fantastic range of exhibits depicting the political history of Florida.

Tallahassee Museum

This 52-acre natural history museum is one of North Florida’s most visited attractions, and with a range of indigenous inhabitants that includes black bears, red wolves, alligators and bald eagles, you’ll soon see why. There are also zip line adventure courses for all ages.

Tallahassee Automobile Museum

If you prefer your history to be of the four-wheeled variety, the Tallahassee Automobile Museum houses more than 140 rare vehicles, including the horse-drawn funeral hearse that carried Abraham Lincoln. There’s also an 1894 Duryea, one of the oldest vehicles ever manufactured in the US, and no less than three Batmobiles.

Culture, arts & crafts 

Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra

Led by Maestro Darko Butorac, the professional orchestra performs a number of shows every year for locals and visitors alike, most of which are held in the Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on the FSU Campus. Performances include the five-concert Masterworks Series, two December holiday concerts, a concert specifically for young people and an open-air concert in the park.

22nd Floor of the Capitol Observatory and Gallery

If you want to see Tallahassee from a different perspective then this 22nd floor observatory gives you panoramic views of the city. There’s also a gallery with works by a number of Florida’s most prominent artists.

1020 ART

If you like nothing more than experiencing art and architecture at its best then this beautiful two-storey building, with its glass atriums and filled with the work of 60 local artists, is an absolute must-see.

Capitol Complex Galleries

The Capitol Galleries are an excellent place to get a feel for the local arts scene, with six galleries featuring constantly changing exhibits showcasing the work of Florida artists and art organisations.

Railroad Square Art Park

The Railroad Square Art Park is home to more than 50 artist studios, galleries and small shops, making this the perfect spot to browse for gifts and souvenirs and get a feel for the local arts scene.

Monticello Opera House

The city’s opera house, built in 1890 by businessman and theatre lover John Perkins, hosts regular musicals, plays, concerts and even murder mystery dinners.

The Tallahassee Ballet

The Tallahassee Ballet typically presents two full-length productions every year, along with a Christmas production of the Nutcracker with full orchestra, to showcase a mixture of local talent and professional guest artists. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Beaches, surfing, parks & river cruises

Apalachee Regional Park

As well as providing a range of hiking, running and biking trails for the general public, this is also one of few sites in the state with a trail specifically designed for cross-country running. So, bring your running shoes and enjoy the pristine, multi-surface course that regularly hosts large-scale running events.

A.J. Henry Park

This 72-acre park, located in northeast Tallahassee, is the perfect spot for a hike or a picnic without having to travel far from the main attractions of the city.

Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park

The manicured gardens and floral architecture of the Alfred B Maclay Gardens State Park make it one of the most photographed sites in the city and a real draw for visitors and locals alike.

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park

Take daily guided riverboat tours around one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world and get an up-close glimpse of native wildlife including turtles, alligators, manatees, deer and an abundance of bird species.

Tom Brown Park

If sports are your thing then this multi-purpose park offers an incredibly wide range of recreational activities including baseball, BMX tracks, tennis courts, a disc-golf course, five softball fields, soccer fields and even a remote-controlled car track.

Golf

There are a wide range of courses in the area to accommodate golfers of every level, whether you play off scratch or prefer to hit and hope. A couple of noteworthy courses include the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course & Club, an 18-hole championship course with comprehensive practice facilities, and the Hilaman Golf Course, which winds through some of the city’s most stunning natural landscapes.

Monticello Karting

If you like your pastimes a little faster paced then the Monticello Karting circuit, one of the best in the world, gives you the chance to enjoy some high-speed excitement.

Tallahassee Rock Gym

Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the area, and after scrambling around on the gym’s 32-feet high rock wall for a few minutes, you’ll soon see why. There’s a challenge for everyone from beginners to experienced climbers at this gym.

The Trousdell Aquatic Center

If you like nothing better than a few lengths to keep you in shape, the 50-metre, 14-lane Trousdell Aquatic Center is open to the public and offers an exceptional level of facilities few UK swimmers will recognise.

Ecotourism, wildlife & the great outdoors

Apalachicola National Forest

This is the largest National Forest in the state of Florida with more than 632,890 acres to explore. Whatever activities you like to pursue in the great outdoors, with swamps, freshwater streams, rivers, lakes, natural springs and mile upon mile of trails and cycling tracks, you’re sure to find plenty of opportunities in this beautiful wilderness.

Bear Creek Educational Forest at Lake Talquin

This is an excellent choice for younger visitors to the forest, with an educational programme with ‘talking trees’ and plenty of camping and hiking opportunities.

FSU Reservation

This park gives offers access to Lake Bradford, a beautiful spot where visitors can swim, kayak and canoe in the crystal clear waters. There’s also a High Challenge ropes course and climbing wall for those who want to experience life above ground.

Harry Smith Outdoors

If it’s fun for all the family you’re looking for then a tour with Harry Smith Outdoors will allow you to enjoy the beautiful rivers, lakes and swamps of north Florida safely. Fishing trips are also available.

Lake Ella

This beautiful park is the perfect place for a quiet stroll, with refreshments and ice creams provided by the cottage shops that surround the lake.
